NAMES
OF GOD
His glorious NAMES,
designated Titles and divine Office.
The English word: God
is translated from the Hebrew word, Elohim—which is a noun implying more than
One in unity.
One God composed of
more than One divine Person.
The Name Of The Lord
is a strong tower:
the righteous runneth
into it, and is safe.
Proverbs 18:10 KJV
Jehovah Jireh
The-LORD-Will-Provide
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt
Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said,
Behold, here I am.
And He said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou
lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt
offering upon one of the mountains which
I will tell thee of.
And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass,
and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood
for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had
told him.
Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the
place afar off.
And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass;
and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you,
And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it
upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they
went both of them together.
And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father:
and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but
where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
And Abraham said, My son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a
burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
And they came to the place which God had told him of; and
Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his
son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife
to slay his son.
And the Angel of the Lord called unto him out of Heaven, and
said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
And He said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou
any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son from Me.
And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind
him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram,
and offered him up for a burnt offering in
the stead of his son.
And Abraham called the Name of that place Jehovah-Jireh: as it
is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.
Gen 22:1-14 KJV
This Name of God is translated as
"The-LORD-Will-Provide" (read from NIV); commemorating the provision
of the ram in place of Isaac for Abraham's sacrifice (v.14). In the proof of
Abraham’s faith, GOD proved that He is Jehovah- Jireh.
God demanded for a "human-burnt offering"
[a human sacrifice]. He demanded for Abraham's only son (v.2).
A burnt offering in Hebrew is usually the sacrifice
of an offering with life; which certainly is consumed as a whole by sacred
fire, and ascends to God, while being consumed. Such were the sacrifices
offered by Abel (Gen 4:3, 4), Noah (Gen 8:20), Abraham (Gen 22:2, 7, 8, 13),
and by the Hebrews in Egypt (Ex 10:25).
The Lord said to Abraham in verse 12 of Genesis 22: “…Now I know that you fear God, because you
have not withheld from Me your son, your only son" (NIV).
While the testing of Abraham’s faith was still in
progress, he had already brought Isaac for an offering (Heb.11:17). This
passage in Hebrews sheds more light for us to well comprehend this unique case
of ‘example of faith.’ It reads further:
“…God
had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring [Seed] will be
reckoned." Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and
figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death (vv.18-19). See
also Gen. 21:12.
Indeed, he who had received the promises was about
to sacrifice his one and only son—by faith he offered his only son. Abraham
worshipped GOD by his act of obedience to HIS Voice. He said to his servants, abide ye here with the ass; and I and the
lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you (v.5).
Many years later; precisely 14 generations after
Abraham, at this Mount Moriah, the LORD appeared to David on the threshing floor
of Araunah the Jebusite. At this same location which is in Jerusalem, Solomon
built the temple of the LORD (read 2 Chron. 3:1).
The mountain of the Lord represented God's Holy
Presence.
"On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided"
(v.14 NIV).
God accepted Abraham's offering on ‘the third day’; this
revealed that the Son of God would be offered to God as a sin-offering for our
transgressions, but would be raised from the dead on ‘the third day.’
God gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes
in Him should not perish, but have everlasting Life (see John 3:16). He gave
His One and Only Son.
Now, that’s the divine provision of ‘sin-offering’
for all-time by JEHOVAH JIREH.
Abraham said to his son Isaac, God will provide
Himself a lamb for a burnt offering (v.8). But, the Lord provided a ram
instead, for the burnt offering (v.13). The patriarch spoke
prophetically, and referred to the Lamb of God which God would provide for Himself,
Who in the fullness of time should take away the sin of the world, and of whom
Isaac was a most expressive type.
All the other lambs which had been offered, had been
such as men chose and men offered; but this was the Lamb which GOD had provided-emphatically,
THE LAMB OF GOD—slain before the foundation of the world.
Because Abraham obeyed the Voice of JEHOVAH JIREH,
GOD made a solemn declaration to Him in verses 15 to 18:
And the Angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of Heaven the
second time, And said, By Myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou
hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will
multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the
sea shore; and thy Seed shall possess the gate of His enemies;
And in thy Seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
because thou hast obeyed My Voice.
KJV
Christ Jesus is “the Seed of Abraham” (see Gal.3:16)
Who has prevailed over ‘the forces of hell’—possessing the gate of His enemies.
And by HIM all the nations of the earth are blessed.
Jehovah Jireh—the LORD our Provider.
