The Holy Spirit—Our Anointing
“Anointing” Is an Apt Metaphor for the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is said to be our anointing. And this word “anointing,” of course, refers
to the ancient practice of anointing with oil.
What a wonderful metaphor for the Holy Spirit! Even in our age, we understand how anointing
works because we so often apply various kinds of lotion or oils to our faces. Oil blends in. Oil permeates and
becomes a part of the person. Oil makes the person’s face glisten. Once applied, it is not easily removed. It must be replenished, but that is only a
problem if you have a limited amount of oil.
God is able to give the Spirit without measure:
Luke
11:13 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to
your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to
those who ask Him?”
*****
John
3:34
“For He whom
God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure.”
